This Arctic Awakening: Adventure and Wellness Week is for you if you want to slow right down and restore your energy levels by hitting the re-set button on your life! Perhaps you’ve got a taste of Arctic serenity from one of our other trips, and want to relish that experience at a slower pace, or perhaps you love your yoga practice and mindful journalling and want a retreat which offers something different.
In addition to the expert tuition and guidance during your retreat, we also include a briefing/training day to alleviate any concerns you may have about the cold. It’s an opportunity to try on our toasty down jackets and mitts for size and evaluate your own clothing for suitability. An Arctic Awakening group will be established on WhatsApp. We provide support and encouragement via this group between the hours of 8am and 8pm daily.
There are no hidden extras – just get yourself to Tromso and we will look after everything else
The accommodation is typical Scandinavian cabin accommodation with shared rooms (2 people per room). Two side-by-side cabins are reserved for this trip. Each sleeps 7/8 in 3 twin rooms and 1 double per cabin. Each cabin has its own kitchen facilities, bathroom and sauna. We are based in a frontier style village called Kilpisjarvi. Whilst the village is remote, the cabins are not and you are within walking distance of the village’s amenities which you might like to explore ‘off-itinerary’ during your down-time.
We will provide you with all the specialist equipment as follows:
Please find our booking terms and conditions for our overseas trips at https://www.adventure.ie/overseas/
As this is a collaboration, there are some small differences to our usual booking conditions. These differences are outlined here:
Deposit:
A non-refundable deposit of €300 (unless otherwise advised) is payable to confirm your booking. .
Cancellation by you:
> Up to 121 days before the start date of your experience: With the exception of your deposit, the balance of your fees are fully refundable. Your deposit may be transferred to an appropriate person or the same experience next year. Only one transfer is permitted.
Our transfer times are dictated by our local transportation partner in accordance with road and weather conditions at this time of year. Travel time from Tromso airport to our cabins in Kilpisjarvi is 2.5 hours approx. These transfer times are fixed.
Our group transfer will depart Tromso airport at 19:30 on Monday 3rd February. The latest flight to meet this is the SAS flight departing Dublin for Tromso (via Oslo) at 12:05 the same day, arriving in to Tromso at 19:05.
Our transfer will also depart Kilpisjarvi for Tromso airport no earlier than 07:00 local Finnish time on Monday 10th February. This is usually sufficient time to catch a flight departing at 10:50 local Norwegian time. (Norway is an hour behind Finland).
There is sometimes better value to be found by flying in/out a day earlier/later, often the savings can pay for your hotel room and can give you time to explore Tromso. The key thing is to be there for the transfer or you will need to make your own way to Kilpisjarvi.
It’s also important to note that your personal travel insurance should include missed flights as a result of weather affecting road conditions etc.
Unlike our other experiences, you don’t need to be super fit to enjoy this restorative experience. You may require sign off by your health practitioner if you are over 65, very overweight or particularly unfit. You are free to opt in and out of activities as you wish.
No experience is necessary, you will be guided and facilitated throughout your Arctic Awakening Adventure and Wellness Week.
The sun rises late and sets early at these latitudes, with a long, serene twilight during that time. Daytime temperatures are -15 to -5C on average, dropping as low as -25C at night. Sometimes we have blue sky days and you may feel quite warm, other days might be overcast or windy, sometimes with snow. Precipitation is generally quite low.
Our base in Kilpisjarvi is ideally positioned for the Aurora. Naturally, we cannot guarantee you will see the Northern Lights. We could have cloud cover the week you are with us, they may not be out or we might sleep through them – though usually participants create an Aurora watch rota and wake everyone up if they are dancing! We are currently (2024/2025) experiencing a solar maximum which means there is a lot of solar activity making it a great time to optimise your chances of seeing them.
Yes, you will. Downtime has been woven throughout the experience to enable you time to explore the locale, to journal, or to simply ‘be’. Of course you can also opt out of an activity to have more time to yourself. You won’t be able to snowshoe or ski without a guide present.
We dine together at breakfast and dinner, welcome snacks are provided and lunches are left free so you can opt to eat alone or in smaller groups if you wish. There are some cute lunch options in the village, or you might decide to use the kitchen facilities in your cabin.
Flights are not included. You can arrange these yourself or we can have our travel partner assist you. In the case of extreme weather conditions which prevent travel in/out of Tromso, additional costs may be incurred by participants. It is highly recommended that appropriate travel insurance is sought and acquired as far in advance as possible to avoid unwelcome surprises. Other exclusions are the extra kit as per the kit list, any extra tours etc. Anything not explicitly stated as included.
Once you’ve secured your place by paying the €300 deposit, you can then pay the balance of your fees in installments as often as you like up to the deadline stated in your contract.
We have space for 14-16 participants in shared cabin accommodation.
If there are no current bookings, yes, otherwise we can offer private bookings in early 2026. All private group bookings are subject to minimum numbers.
Absolutely. In fact, many of our clients do book solo. Solo travellers will be roomed with others of the same gender.
It is essential, and a condition of participation, that all participants take out additional insurance for the trip. This needs to cover repatriation to your home and rescue fees. Your insurance must all the activities provided during this adventure and wellness week. Let us know if you need details on insurance companies. We also advise that you apply for your EHIC (formally E11).
